Thanks to my buddy Gene SOUND OBSESSIONS Tech time! We are seeing this more and more so time for a little wire education. Lesson here is don't cheap out on car audio amp wiring kits!! You get what you pay for.
Below is a pic of some 4 ga power wire ordered from eBay. Looks like a good size wire from the outside. ?? Boooo.
But the most common thing we are seeing is what's called CCA, or copper coated aluminum. Years ago we used to sell it as well, it's considerably cheaper, but the performance is not good. It doesn't carry the current like pure copper does. Amps don't make the power they should, lights dimming more when bass hits, and blacked or melted fuse holders under the hood from heat are all potential problems because of it. Can you say fire??!
